Safety First: What Every Castor Oil User Needs to Know Before They Start

Before You Begin:

In all my years of using castor oil, I have never come across anyone who reacted to the oil itself. That is not something I can say about many ingredients, and it still surprises people when I tell them. Where I have seen skin irritation pop up is when essential oils or herbs enter the picture. Essential oils and herbs are powerful and deserve respect. Using too much of a single one, or combining too many different essential oils or herbs in a recipe, all at once, is where skin irritation tends to creep in.

Important Safety Information

This book is for educational and informational purposes only. The information provided is not to be used to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition in humans or animals. Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional or seek veterinary advice before starting any new health regimen, especially if you (or your pet):

  • Are pregnant or nursing
  • Have underlying health conditions
  • Are taking prescription medications
  • Have allergies or sensitivities
  • Are considering the internal use of castor oil

Pregnancy Warning:

Castor oil should NOT be used internally during pregnancy. It can stimulate uterine contractions and may induce labor. Pregnant women should avoid internal use entirely and consult their healthcare provider before any topical use.

Grapefruit Essential Oil and Fresh Grapefruit

Grapefruit and grapefruit essential oil contain natural compounds called furanocoumarins, which can interfere with the way the body processes certain medications, potentially causing them to become significantly stronger or weaker than intended.

Medications commonly affected include cholesterol-lowering drugs, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressants, certain antidepressants, anxiety medications, and some antibiotics.

If you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, consult your physician or pharmacist before using fresh grapefruit or grapefruit essential oil topically or internally.

Phototoxic Potential in Certain Citrus Essential Oils

Some essential oils are phototoxic, meaning they can cause a strong sunburn-like reaction if applied to the skin and then exposed to UV light from the sun or tanning beds. This reaction is most often associated with certain citrus oils.

To use phototoxic oils safely, dilute them properly and avoid applying them to areas that will be exposed to the sun, including the face, for at least 12 to 24 hours before UV exposure. It’s also wise to test a small amount on your skin first to see how you respond before applying more broadly.

General Safety Guidelines:

  • Always perform a patch test before using castor oil or any new ingredient on your skin
  • Start slowly and observe your body’s response
  • Never use castor oil internally for more than 7 consecutive days without guidance from a healthcare provider
  • Store castor oil properly in a cool, dry, and dark place in amber glass bottles
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Discontinue use if irritation occurs

Medical Conditions Requiring Extra Caution:

Those with inflammatory bowel disease, appendicitis, intestinal blockages, or other digestive conditions should not use castor oil internally without explicit medical approval.

Your safety is paramount. When in doubt, always consult a healthcare professional who understands both conventional medicine and natural approaches.

A note from Nora: Castor Oil for Life is anticipated to launch in mid to late June 2026, and things are coming together beautifully. The blogs are beginning to take shape, each one drawing from the book to give you a glimpse of what's inside. They're meant to spark ideas and curiosity, though you may find there's still plenty to explore in each one. The full depth and detail, however, live within the pages of the book itself.

Edited 5-1-2026: The newsletter signup on the Connect page is up and running, and that's where the real conversation begins. Fresh recipes, ones not found in the book, along with the latest research and everything new, will land right in your inbox. It wouldn't feel right to simply repeat the recipes already in the book for those who've invested in it, so the newsletter will always bring you something new.

Because this is more than a book. It's an ongoing journey, and I'd love for you to be part of it.
